Diwali in Epsom

October / November (lunar)

This year's gathering

Diwali is the festival of lights: diyas in the windows, sweets on the table, Lakshmi puja, and the hope that the year ahead is kinder than the one behind. In Mauritius it is a public holiday. In British Hindu Mauritian homes it is often the festival children remember most clearly — the smell of ghee, the new clothes, the visiting.

Hindu Mauritian Sabha (UK) celebrates Diwali together at St. Clement’s Church Hall in Epsom. Expect lights, sweets, music and prayers, and a hall full of families who keep the day in both languages. You do not need a ticket to belong here; when we do ticket, it is only to plan numbers.

The date follows the lunar calendar, usually in October or November. This page is the evergreen home for Diwali with us; the year’s evening — time, running order, tickets — appears below once it is confirmed.

Questions

When is Diwali this year?

Diwali moves with the lunar calendar, typically October or November. When HMS (UK) has booked the hall, the date and time are listed on this page and under Events.

Where is the HMS (UK) Diwali celebration?

St. Clement’s Church Hall, 307 Kingston Road, Epsom KT19 0BW. We welcome families from Sutton, Kingston, Croydon, Wimbledon and the rest of Surrey — the gathering itself is in Epsom.

Is it family-friendly?

Yes. Diwali with us is a community evening: children, grandparents, and everyone in between. It is not a late club night.

Do I need a ticket?

Some years we ask you to book so we can plan food and seating. If a ticket link exists, it will be on this year’s event page. If you only see “date to be announced”, nothing is on sale yet.

How do I get to Epsom?

The hall is on Kingston Road (the A240) at the West Ewell / Epsom border. See the Epsom page for stations, parking, and notes if you are coming from nearby towns.
