On 1 February Mauritius pauses to remember the abolition of slavery in 1835. It is a public holiday on the island — a civic day of honour, not a religious festival — and it sits close to the heart of how many Mauritian families understand their history.
Hindu Mauritian Sabha (UK) keeps the day on our calendar so the Mauritian year feels complete here too. We do not currently host a gathering for it. If you mark 1 February at home, or you are introducing the day to a generation born in Britain, you are in good company.
